floor pan
Car's metal foundation
The floor pan is the stamped metal sheet forming the bottom of a vehicle's passenger compartment.
It provides structural rigidity and serves as the foundation to which seats, carpet, and other interior components attach.
Rust in the floor pan is a common problem in older vehicles, particularly in regions where roads are salted: The mechanic found holes in the floor pan during inspection.
