floating ribs
Lowest thoracic pair
Floating ribs are the two lowest pairs of ribs in the human ribcage, distinguished by having no attachment to the sternum or to other ribs at their front ends.
While upper ribs connect to the breastbone via cartilage, floating ribs anchor only to the spine, leaving their front ends free.
This gives them more flexibility but less protection for organs beneath.
