floating rib
Sternum-free rib
A floating rib is one of the two lowest pairs of ribs in humans, attached to the spine but not connected to the breastbone or other ribs in front.
Unlike true ribs, they lack cartilage anchoring them to the sternum, giving them their name.
The term sometimes extends to include the eleventh pair, which are similarly unattached.
