fletchings

Shaft's stabilizing fins

Fletchings are the feathers or vanes attached to the rear of an arrow, stabilizing its flight by creating drag and spin.

Traditional fletchings use bird feathers; modern ones are often plastic.

The term comes from the verb fletch, meaning to attach these stabilizers: The archer examined the fletchings on her competition arrows.
