flamens
Ancient Roman clergy
Flamens were priests in ancient Roman religion, each devoted to the worship of a particular deity.
The three major flamens served Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus; twelve minor flamens tended lesser gods.
The position required strict ritual purity and came with elaborate taboos—the flamen of Jupiter, for instance, could never see an army in battle array or touch a horse.
