flintlock rifle
Spark-ignited long gun
A flintlock rifle is a firearm that uses a flint striking mechanism to ignite gunpowder.
When the trigger is pulled, a piece of flint strikes steel, creating sparks that ignite powder in the pan, which fires the main charge.
Flintlocks dominated warfare and hunting from the 17th through early 19th centuries before percussion caps replaced them.
The museum displayed a Revolutionary War–era flintlock rifle.
