find and replace

Search and swap

Find and replace is a text-editing function that locates specific characters, words, or phrases and substitutes them with something else.

Available in word processors, code editors, and most software handling text, it can change one instance or all occurrences at once: I used find and replace to change every "colour" to "color".

Advanced versions support pattern matching and regular expressions.
