federal bonds
National debt instruments
Federal bonds are debt securities issued by a national government to finance public spending.
Investors lend money to the government in exchange for periodic interest payments and return of principal at maturity.
In the United States, these include Treasury bonds, notes, and bills—considered among the safest investments because they're backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government: She shifted her portfolio toward federal bonds as retirement approached.
