fakirs

Mendicant holy men

Fakirs are Muslim or Hindu ascetics who live by begging and practice extreme self-discipline or self-mortification.

The word comes from Arabic for "poor man." In Western usage, fakir often refers to any wandering holy man or wonder-worker from South Asia, sometimes with connotations of trickery: The fakir walked across hot coals.

The spelling faqir also appears.
