factorising

Breaking into parts

Factorising is the British spelling of factorizing—breaking a mathematical expression into factors that multiply together to produce it.

To factorise 12 is to express it as 2 × 2 × 3; to factorise x² − 9 is to write it as (x + 3)(x − 3).

The skill is fundamental to algebra: I spent an hour factorising quadratic equations.
