factorisation

Breaking into factors

Factorisation is the British spelling of factorization—breaking something into its constituent factors.

In mathematics, it means expressing a number or expression as a product of simpler elements: The factorisation of 12 is 2 × 2 × 3.

Prime factorisation reduces a number to its prime components.

The process applies to algebraic expressions as well: factorising quadratic equations.
