expired film
Past-date photography stock
Expired film is photographic film past its manufacturer's recommended use-by date.
As film ages, its chemical emulsion degrades, producing unpredictable results: color shifts, increased grain, reduced contrast, or fogging.
Some photographers seek out expired film deliberately for these effects, treating the degradation as an aesthetic choice rather than a flaw: I shot the whole roll on expired film from the 1990s.
