emergency cesarean
Unplanned surgical birth
An emergency cesarean is a surgical delivery performed when complications arise suddenly during labor or late pregnancy, requiring immediate intervention to protect the life of the mother, baby, or both.
Unlike a scheduled cesarean, it happens urgently—often within minutes of the decision: The baby's heart rate dropped and they rushed her in for an emergency cesarean.
Common triggers include fetal distress, umbilical cord problems, or placental abruption.
