embiggening

Increasing in size

Embiggening is the act of making something bigger or more significant.

The word was coined in a 1996 episode of *The Simpsons* as deliberate nonsense—a fake word meant to sound absurd—but has since entered genuine use, particularly online, often with ironic awareness of its origins: The embiggening of the federal deficit continues unabated.
