elegists

Writers of laments

Elegists are poets who write elegies—mournful poems lamenting the dead or reflecting on loss and mortality.

The term applies both to classical poets who wrote in the elegiac meter and to any poet known for commemorative or sorrowful verse: Gray and Tennyson rank among English literature's finest elegists.
