electrostatic discharge

Spark from friction

Electrostatic discharge is the sudden flow of electricity between two objects at different electrical potentials—the spark you feel touching a doorknob after walking across carpet, or the arc of lightning between cloud and ground.

In electronics, ESD can damage sensitive components, which is why technicians ground themselves before handling circuit boards: The chip was fried by electrostatic discharge.
