electroshock therapy
Seizure-inducing treatment
Electroshock therapy is a psychiatric treatment in which electrical currents are passed through the brain to induce brief seizures.
Used primarily for severe depression, bipolar disorder, and certain other mental illnesses when other treatments fail.
The formal term is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
Earlier versions caused violent convulsions and memory loss; modern practice uses anesthesia and muscle relaxants: After medication failed, her doctor recommended electroshock therapy.
