effendi
Ottoman honorific title
Effendi is a title of respect used historically in the Ottoman Empire and still found in parts of the Middle East and Mediterranean.
It was applied to educated men, government officials, and members of the professional class—roughly equivalent to "sir" or "mister" but with connotations of learning and social standing.
The title typically follows a person's name: Mehmet Effendi.
In modern usage it survives mainly in formal or traditional contexts.
