earwig
Bug with pincers
An earwig is a slender insect with pincers at its tail end.
The name comes from an old superstition that they crawl into people's ears—they don't, though they do favor dark, tight spaces.
To earwig is to eavesdrop or whisper insinuatingly: He earwigged their conversation from the next booth.
