e-text

Screen-based publication

E-text is electronic text—written material stored and read in digital form rather than on paper.

The term emerged with early digital archives and e-readers: Project Gutenberg offers thousands of free e-texts.

Now largely supplanted by "ebook" for commercial publications, e-text persists in academic and archival contexts where the focus is on searchable, plain-text formats rather than formatted books.
