e-fuels

Manufactured carbon-neutral fuel

E-fuels, short for electrofuels or synthetic fuels, are liquid or gaseous fuels produced using renewable electricity, typically by combining hydrogen (made through electrolysis) with captured carbon dioxide.

They're designed to work in existing engines and infrastructure, offering a potential path to decarbonize aviation, shipping, and other sectors where batteries aren't practical.

The airline announced plans to blend e-fuels into its jet fuel by 2030.

Critics note their production remains energy-intensive and expensive compared to direct electrification.
