dysregulated
Out of proper balance
Dysregulated describes a biological or psychological system that has lost its normal regulatory control.
The term appears most often in medical and scientific contexts: a dysregulated immune system attacks the body's own tissues, dysregulated emotions swing unpredictably.
The study found dysregulated cortisol levels in patients with chronic stress.
The prefix dys- signals malfunction rather than complete absence—the regulation exists but works poorly.
