A dumbwaiter is a small freight elevator used to move food, dishes, or other items between floors—typically connecting a kitchen to a dining room above or below.
The name reflects that it performs a waiter's task silently, without the need for human servants on stairs.
In older homes, dumbwaiters were often built into walls; in restaurants and hotels, they remain practical for moving supplies.
