dry-heaving
Vomiting without vomit
Dry-heaving is retching without producing vomit—the body goes through the convulsive motions of throwing up, but nothing comes out.
It often follows actual vomiting when the stomach is empty, or accompanies intense nausea, anxiety, or disgust: She was dry-heaving over the toilet for ten minutes after the food poisoning hit.
