Ingesting a hallucinogen
Dropping acid is taking LSD, the hallucinogenic drug.
The phrase comes from the drug's distribution on small paper tabs or liquid drops placed on the tongue: We spent the summer of '69 dropping acid and listening to the Grateful Dead.
The expression dates to 1960s counterculture and remains the standard casual term for LSD use.
