driver ant
African army insect
Driver ants are large African army ants that travel in massive columns, consuming nearly any animal in their path.
Unlike most ants, they don't maintain permanent nests but move nomadically, raiding as they go.
Their colonies can number in the millions, and their coordinated swarms can overwhelm creatures far larger than themselves.
The villagers evacuated ahead of the driver ants.
