dragooning

Pressuring into service

Dragooning is pressuring or coercing someone into doing something, often through intimidation or harassment.

The word comes from dragoons—mounted infantry soldiers historically used to suppress civilian populations: They were dragooned into attending the meeting.

The implication is reluctant compliance under duress rather than willing participation.
