downbow

Toward the frog

A downbow is a stroke on a stringed instrument where the bow moves from frog (the held end) to tip, producing a naturally accented attack.

The term contrasts with upbow, which moves tip to frog.

In sheet music, a downbow is indicated by a squared bracket symbol: The passage is marked with downbows on the first beat of each measure.
