A down marker is one of the sideline indicators used in American football to show the current down (first, second, third, or fourth).
The down marker displays a large number and moves along the sideline as the ball advances, helping players, officials, and spectators track the sequence of plays: The referee signaled to the down marker after the incomplete pass.
