double-space

Lines with gaps

Double-space means to leave a blank line between each line of text, creating extra vertical space on a page.

The term comes from typewriters, where double-spacing literally meant advancing the paper two lines instead of one.

In word processing, double-spacing typically refers to any generous line spacing that leaves room for handwritten edits or improves readability: The professor required all essays to be double-spaced.

The verb form works the same way: Double-space your document before submitting.
