doctress
Woman who heals
Doctress is an archaic or humorous term for a female doctor.
The word follows the pattern of adding -ess to create feminine forms of nouns (as in actress or waitress), but this convention has largely fallen out of favor.
Today, doctor is used regardless of gender, and doctress sounds either deliberately old-fashioned or playful.
The village doctress was known for her herbal remedies.
