direwolves
Prehistoric massive wolves
Direwolves is the plural of direwolf, an extinct species of large wolf that roamed North America during the Pleistocene epoch.
The term gained wide currency through fantasy fiction, particularly *Game of Thrones*, where direwolves are massive, intelligent wolves bonded to the Stark family: Each of the Stark children received a direwolf pup.
