red wolves
Southeastern American predators
Red wolves are a species of wolf native to the southeastern United States, smaller than gray wolves with reddish-brown fur.
Once widespread from Texas to Florida, they were declared extinct in the wild by 1980 before limited reintroduction programs began.
The species remains critically endangered, with debates over whether it constitutes a distinct species or a gray wolf-coyote hybrid.
