derivative works
Based-on original works
Derivative works are creative productions based on one or more preexisting works—translations, adaptations, sequels, or remixes that incorporate elements from an original.
The term is central to copyright law, which grants original creators control over derivative works: The film was an unauthorized derivative work of the novel.
Fan fiction, cover songs, and movie adaptations of books are all derivative works.
