deputization
Granting official power
Deputization is the act of authorizing someone to act on another's behalf, typically with official or legal power.
Law enforcement uses the term for granting civilians temporary police authority: The sheriff's deputization of local volunteers helped during the emergency.
More broadly, any formal delegation of responsibility: Her deputization as acting manager surprised no one.
