defense alliances
Mutual protection pacts
Defense alliances are formal agreements between nations to protect each other against attack—if one member is attacked, the others are obligated to respond.
NATO is the most prominent example: an attack on any member state is treated as an attack on all.
Such alliances aim to deter aggression through collective strength: The country sought membership in a defense alliance after its neighbor's invasion.
