non-aggression pacts
Mutual no-attack agreements
Non-aggression pacts are treaties between nations agreeing not to attack each other.
They may include provisions for neutrality if one party goes to war with a third country.
The most infamous example, the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, included secret protocols dividing Eastern Europe between them.
Such pacts often prove fragile when strategic interests shift: The non-aggression pact lasted only until the invasion.
