decoy duck
Hunter's floating fake
A decoy duck is a model duck used by hunters to attract live ducks within shooting range.
The decoys float on water or sit in fields, mimicking resting birds.
Figuratively, any lure or distraction meant to draw attention away from something else: The press conference was a decoy duck while the real negotiations happened elsewhere.
