carburising
Surface hardening process
Carburising is a metalworking process that hardens the surface of steel by heating it in a carbon-rich environment, allowing carbon atoms to diffuse into the metal.
The result is a hard, wear-resistant outer layer while the core remains tough and ductile.
Also spelled carburizing.
The gears were carburised to extend their service life.
