debtholder

Lender awaiting repayment

A debtholder is someone who owns debt issued by another party—typically bonds or loans.

When a company borrows money, the lenders become debtholders with claims on the company's assets.

Debtholders differ from shareholders: they're owed repayment with interest but don't own equity in the enterprise.

The debtholders agreed to restructure the company's obligations.
