deaf-mutes
Cannot hear, speak
Deaf-mutes is an older term for people who are both deaf and unable to speak, now considered outdated and offensive.
The term wrongly implied that deaf people cannot communicate, when in fact most can learn to speak or use sign language.
The preferred terms are simply deaf or hard of hearing: The school for deaf-mutes closed in the 1970s.
