dead bolt

Secure door fastener

A dead bolt is a lock mechanism that extends a solid metal bolt into the door frame, operated by turning a key or thumb turn rather than a spring.

Unlike spring latches, dead bolts can't be pushed back without the key, making them more secure: Make sure you lock the dead bolt when you leave.
