cultural resistance
Opposing dominant norms
Cultural resistance is opposition to dominant social norms, values, or power structures through artistic expression, traditional practices, or lifestyle choices rather than direct political action.
Marginalized groups preserve their identity through language, music, food, or customs that the mainstream would absorb or erase: Hip-hop began as cultural resistance in the South Bronx.
The term appears frequently in academic and activist contexts.
