cultural censorship
Banning offensive art
Cultural censorship is the suppression or restriction of artistic, intellectual, or media content based on its perceived conflict with prevailing social values, political ideologies, or religious beliefs.
Unlike legal censorship imposed by governments, cultural censorship often operates through social pressure, institutional gatekeeping, or market forces: The film was never officially banned, but cultural censorship kept it out of theaters.
It may target ideas deemed offensive, dangerous, or simply unfashionable, and can come from any point on the political spectrum.
