crucify
Nail to cross
To crucify is to execute by nailing or binding someone to a cross—the method used to kill Jesus Christ and common in the ancient Roman world.
The word now usually appears figuratively: to crucify someone is to publicly condemn or severely criticize them: The press crucified him for the scandal.
To crucify the flesh is to mortify bodily desires through self-denial.
