crucifying

Death by cross

Crucifying is the act of executing someone by nailing or binding them to a cross—the method by which Jesus Christ was killed, central to Christian imagery and theology.

Extended to mean causing extreme suffering or, more loosely, harshly criticizing or punishing: The press is crucifying him for that comment.

To crucify oneself is to torment oneself with guilt or excessive self-denial.
