cross-up

Sneaky signal mix

A cross-up is a deceptive move, especially in basketball or fighting games, where you fake one direction then go another, leaving your opponent off-balance or guessing wrong.

The term extends to any situation where someone gets fooled or confused by misdirection: The defense got crossed up on that play.

To cross someone up is to deceive or double-cross them.
