criterion-referenced

Fixed standard evaluation

Criterion-referenced describes assessments that measure performance against a fixed standard rather than against other test-takers.

A criterion-referenced test determines whether you've mastered specific skills or knowledge: The driving test is criterion-referenced—you either pass or fail regardless of how others perform.

Contrasts with norm-referenced testing, which ranks people relative to each other.
