crenellate
Cut defensive notches
To crenellate is to furnish with crenels—the notched openings along the top of a castle wall that allow defenders to shoot while remaining protected.
A crenellated wall or tower has that distinctive alternating pattern of raised sections and gaps.
The word extends to anything with a similar notched or indented edge: crenellated paper borders, a crenellated pie crust.
