cost-sharing

Splitting the bill

Cost-sharing is the division of expenses between parties—typically an insurer and the insured, or between government programs and beneficiaries.

In health insurance, cost-sharing includes deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that patients pay out of pocket: The plan has high cost-sharing requirements.

The term also applies to grants requiring recipients to fund part of a project themselves.
